Welcome to Summit Hill Borough

North Whitehall Township Summit Hill Borough is a small local government entity located in Carbon County and lies on the crest of Pisgah Mountain, with its municipal boundaries extending north to Nesquehoning Mountain and south over Mauch Chunk Mountain. Summit Hill is one of the oldest communities in the State's anthracite coal region, with roots dating back to the late 1700s.

Summit Hill Borough has a rich history that dates back to its early days as a mining camp. It was the western terminus of the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway and the site of some of the earliest coal mines in North America. The Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company began mining in 1792, establishing Summit Hill as a significant location for coal extraction. The borough's history is marked by its contributions to the coal industry and its development as a community.

Summit Hill's Motto - "Where it all began" reflects the significance in early coal mining and rail transportation.
